Tjarlirli Art is based at Tjukurla, a small community situated NE of Warburton, some 130 km east of Warakurna, in the Ngaanyatjarra Lands on the Western Australian side of the WA and NT border, just north of Docker River. Tjarlirli Art was established in mid 2006 and is a community based arts collective. The resident population is approximately 50 – 100 people and they primarily speak Ngaanyatjarra, but there are strong links with the Pitjantjatjarra people to the north, particularly with the communities of Kintore and Kiwikurra.
Tjarlirli Art is the first locally owned and controlled Art Centre in Tjukurla and was established to offer productive and fulfilling arts practice to Community members, create opportunities for independent incomes to community members and to provide training and support in business management, enterprise development, governance, and life skills. Since February 2007 over 70 people have painted at the Art Centre. There are a core group of approximately 20 regular artists. The core group of elders who started Tjarlirli Art are still painting and active in directing the Art Centre business and culture.
